Sour Dough Bread Recipe
This is a straightforward recipe that we use every week. We've skipped buying bread from the store in favor of this healthier option. Its made with only 3 ingredients and our family loves it. We used very few special kitchen tools but I recommend the following items:
Step 1 - Make the Starter:
In a medium sized bowl combine 123g of bread flour with 113g of water. Use a container with a lid that can be left slightly ajar to allow air to move and leave lots of extra room in the bowl for the starter to expand. Store the bowl on a location of your house with a consistent temperature and continue to add the same ratio of bread flour and water every day around the same time if you can. You are creating a substance that will allow natural yeast to grow. Once natural yeast is active your starter will have bubbles and become airy. Feed the starter every day for at least a week or two before trying to use it to make sour dough.
Step 2 - Mix the Dough Ingredients
Using a large mixing bowl, combine 225g of starter with 475g of warm water. Using a whisk, mix the starter into the water. Next add 1 tablespoon of salt. Mix again. Finally add 700g of flour. Knead the ingredients with your hands to form a consistent looking rough dough. Add a few additional teaspoons of flour to fine tune the consistency of the dough as this can depend on the region where you live. Sour dough should seem wetter than a typical dough.
